🌱 Global Significance
Organized by the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).
Linked to the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, which sets ambitious targets to halt biodiversity loss by 2030.
Highlights the role of local communities, indigenous peoples, youth, and civil society in protecting ecosystems.
🐅 Odisha’s Role
Odisha is home to extraordinary biodiversity—from Chilika Lake’s migratory birds to Simlipal’s tigers and elephants. Local initiatives like mangrove restoration in Kendrapara and sea turtle conservation near Gahirmatha embody the 2026 theme, showing how grassroots efforts resonate globally.
✒️ Philatelic Tribute
India Post marked the occasion with a special cover and cancellation from Bhubaneswar (22.05.2026).
The cancellation design features elephants, rhinoceroses, and trees, symbolizing harmony with nature.
The cover artwork celebrates diverse wildlife—from forests to oceans—reinforcing the message: “Acting locally for global impact.”
Many thanks to the young philatelist Shubhrajyoti Behera for sending this special cover by Speed post on the issue date.
It was my honour to be invited as a guest by the Department of Posts to release the commemorative Special Cover on the occasion of International Day for Biodiversity 2026 at the Bhubaneswar Philatelic Bureau. The event was graced by senior officials of the Department of Posts, making it a memorable celebration of Odisha’s role in global biodiversity awareness.
