Latvian Birds Barn Swallow(hirundo rustica) & Goldfinch(Carduelis carduelis) FDC from LATVIA

FDC Name:Latvian Birds
Issue Date:16th JUN'2012
Details:Two new additions have been made by Latvijas Pasts to the stamp series Birds of Latvia - stamps depicting bird species characteristic to Latvia: the Barn Swallow (Hirundo rustica) and the Goldfinch (Carduelis carduelis).
The denomination of Barn Swallow is LVL 0.35, corresponding to the cost of mailing a regular letter within the territory of Latvia. The total print run is 400,000 stamps. The denomination of Goldfinch is LVL 0.98, suitable for sending a registered letter within Latvia; 80,000 of these stamps will be released. The stamps have been designed by artist Ģirts Grīva.

The release of the stamps is accompanied by two first-day covers and two special cancellations. The covers are adorned by pictures of the swallow and the goldfinch in their natural environment, while the cancellation depicts each bird in graphical form.

The Birds of Latvia series was initiated by Latvijas Pasts in 2010 with the release of the stamps European Roller and Eagle-owl. In 2011, these were joined by Icterine Warbler and Snake Eagle.

The Barn Swallow is the most widespread species of swallow. It is a bird of open country and builds nests in closed, man-made structures protected from precipitation and wind. The Barn Swallow is renowned for its skill of catching insects in flight. To many nations, the Barn Swallow is a symbol of hope, luck, and the coming of spring; Latvian beliefs about swallows relate to the weather, money and happiness.

The Goldfinch is one of the most beautiful birds found in Latvia. The Goldfinch nests and winters in Latvia, as well as migrating through it. It prefers the edges of forests, birch groves, parks and orchards. The goldfinch's preferred food is small seeds, such as those from thistles, from which the little bird's Latvian name is derived.

FDC Name:175th anniversary of Atis Kronvalds.
Issue Date:14th APR'2012

In 1863,Kronvalds wrote the German textbook The First Step of the Little German, in the introduction noting the great role of the German language in education, and underlining that the book is intended for Latvians. Kronvalds believed that language and Latvian schools should be the foundation of the national culture, and considered their development as the main task.
In 1873, Kronvalds participated in the First Latvian Song and Dance Festival by delivering two brilliant speeches defending the national culture, folk songs and language.Atis Kronvalds is considered to be one of the founders of the oldest Latvian student corporation Lettonia.

The Place Where Stories Are Born FDC from LATIVA

FDC Name:The Place Where Stories Are Born.
Issue Date:27th JAN'2012
Details: The stamp The Place Where Stories Are Born, which was designed by Evita Eidinta and came out on top in the public voting on social networks, has been released with a print run of 500,000 stamps and a denomination of LVL 0.35.
In October 2011, in order to promote the work of Latvijas Pasts and one of the universal symbols of mail - the postage stamp - Latvijas Pasts involved the public in the creation of a stamp by using the possibilities offered by social networks. A total of 412 stamp designs were initially submitted for the competition, authored by both natural persons and legal entities, of which 343 fulfilled the conditions of the competition and were published on the website www.jaunapastmarka.lv. A committee of philatelic specialists, advertising experts and graphical designers selected 30 designs, to which anyone could give their vote over a period of two weeks by using a Twitter, Draugiem.lv or Facebook account.
A total of 4503 people cast their votes for their favorite designs. The Place Where Stories Are Born, which depicts the stone lions of Vērmanes Garden and the nearby tree-shrouded building of the restaurant Bibliotēka ("Library"), received the support of 752 voters.
The competition between this design and the closest follower - Ice Flower - was very fierce, especially on the final days of voting, when a video supporting the Ice Flower was posted online, while certain radio stations urged to vote for The Place Where Stories Are Born. In the end, Ice Flower placed second with 683 votes, while the third place with 595 votes was taken by the Hipster-hedgehog, whose supporters were also among the most enthusiastic.
The fourth place with 431 votes was taken by the stamp design Rooster. The other competitors received a lower number of votes: Languages - 284 votes, I love Latvia! - 204 votes, Delicious Latvia - 195 votes, Kuldīga - 169 votes, Inspiring Riga - 169 votes, Bird - 108 votes.
The active participation of voters proved that the stamp is a very important national "business card", in spite of the role of modern technologies in everyday communication, and that many people have an opinion on what design it should have. Latvijas Pasts is therefore strongly considering organizing such contests again in 2012.
Each year, Latvijas Pasts releases 12 to 16 new stamp designs and prints up to 17 million stamps, which then travel all over the world on letters and other postal items. The themes and subjects for each year are chosen by the special Stamp Issue Commission. However, in order to create a stamp with the participation of as many people of Latvia as possible, Latvijas Pasts offered everyone the unique opportunity to submit their own stamp design.

It is bordered to the north by Estonia (border length 343 km), to the south by Lithuania (588 km), to the east by the Russian Federation (276 km), to the southeast by Belarus (141 km) and shares maritime borders to the west with Sweden. With 2,229,641 inhabitants and a territory of 64,589 km2 (24,938 sq mi) it is one of the least populous and least densely populated countries of the European Union. The capital of Latvia is Riga, the official language Latvian and the currency Lats (Ls). The country has a temperate seasonal climate.
The Latvians are a Baltic people, culturally related to the Estonians and Lithuanians. Together with the Finno-Ugric Livs (or Livonians), the Latvians are the indigenous people of Latvia.Latvian is an Indo-European language and along with Lithuanian the only two surviving members of the Baltic branch. Indigneous minority languages are Latgalian and the nearly extinct Finno-Ugric Livonian language. In terms of geography, territory and population Latvia is the middle of three Baltic states: Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Latvia and Estonia share a long common history: historical Livonia, times of German, Polish-Lithuanian, Swedish, Russian, Nazi German and Soviet rule, 13th century Christianization and 16th century Protestant Reformation. Both countries are home to a large number of ethnic Russians (27.3% in Latvia and 26% in Estonia) of whom some are non-citizens. Latvia is historically predominantly Protestant, except for the region of Latgalia in the southeast which is historically predominantly Roman Catholic.
Latvia is a unitary parliamentary republic and is divided into 118 administrative divisions of which 109 municipalities and 9 cities. There are five planning regions: Courland (Kurzeme), Latgalia (Latgale), Riga (Rīga), Vidzeme and Zemgale. The Republic of Latvia was founded on November 18, 1918. It was occupied and annexed by the Soviet Union between 1940–1941 and 1945–1991 and by Nazi Germany between 1941-1945. The peaceful "Singing Revolution" between 1987 and 1991 and "Baltic Chain" demonstration on August 23, 1989 led to the independence of the Baltic states. Latvia declared the restoration of its de facto independence on August 21, 1991.

In the global financial crisis of 2008–2010 Latvia was the hardest hit of the European Union member states, with a GDP decline of 26.54% in that period. However by 2010 commentators noted signs of stabilisation in the Latvian economy. The United Nations lists Latvia as a country with a Human Development Index (HDI) of "Very High"(Source-Wikipedia)
