Tung Blossom Postage Lable(ATM) FDC from TAIWAN

FDC Name:Tung Blossom ATM
Issue Date:15th APR'2009
Details:Tung trees come in full blossom in areas where most Hakkas populate. This beautiful coincidence tells the wondrous connection between Hakka towns and Tung trees. Tung became an economic crop when Japan occupied Taiwan. Its seed oil was used for waterproof coating and its timber for matches, toothpicks and clogs. Hakka children used to collect and sell Tung seeds for money. Now when Tung flowers start to shower, strolling along the old streets to watch grannies braiding straw teapot containers and listen to their stories of the yore.
The investigation researches into the phenology, biologic features, ecological distribution, and associated plants of aleurites in an attempt to set up initial biologic data for aleurites. Tung indicates Aleurites montana (Lour.) Wils and A. fordii Hemsl. The result of the investigation shows that Aleurites montana (Lour.) Wils occupies 95% of the total amount. In Miaoli area, it is not seen only in costal townships such as Tongsiao, Houlong, and Chunan. The leafless period of Aleurites montana (Lour.) Wils is January and February. Its leaf-expansion period is March. Its full bloom period is April. Two blossoms appear from April to May and from late July to late September. After 14 days’ growth, its length is fixed. The first flower appears on the 20th day. It takes about 36 hours to change from a bud into a white flower. The period since its blooming to withering is about 48 hours. The period from fruit-setting to its maturity is about five months, since May to October. After late July the size of the fruit seldom changes. In late September, the fruit gets dried and falls. All of them fall before early December. The bee pollen diameter of Aleurites montana (Lour.) Wils is 69 (66-72) μ m, bigger than other plants’ bee pollen. Dealt with FAA, it is under the most stable situation without withering and hollowing. Judged from the group structure, the diameter of the majority is about 16-20 cm.
