Details:
The great crested newt (Triturus cristatus) is a species in the class of Amphibia, the order Caudata and the family Salamandridae. It lives in North and Central Europe in territories lying north of the Alps and the Danube. In Estonia the great crested newt mainly lives on the continent and is more numerous in Southeastern Estonia. An adult newt can grow up to 18 cm long, the female being slightly shorter than the male. The colour of the great crested newt depends on its living environment, but it is usually dark – black, brownish or grayish on the back and yellow or orange with dark patches underneath. The skin is rough like that of the toad. During the mating period the male develops bluish white stripes on the sides of the tail and a relatively high crest, which stops at the stump of the body and has given the name to the species. Females get a narrow yellow line down the spine, but they have no crest. The great crested newt prefers as its habitat forest lakes with no fish in them, ponds or pools, but can be found also in cultural landscapes with large rive valleys. The great crested newt is a protected species in Estonia.

Cathedral & John Connon School,Mumbai FDC from INDIA

FDC Name:Cathedral & John Connon School,Mumbai
Issue Date:27th OCT'2010
Details:
The Cathedral & John Connon School is a co-educational, private school located in Mumbai, Maharashtra. It is considered as one of the finest schools in India.According to the Education World-C fore Survey of Schools 2009, the school has been ranked second in the all India ranking of the best schools in India. It was ranked first in the Western region as the most respected school and ranked first in India for its distinguished alumni which includes top industrialists, businessmen, politicians, celebrities, and even noble laureates.
The motto of the school is "Clarum Efficunt Studia" which means "Studies maketh famous"
In 1860 Bishop Harding and the Cathedral Chaplain decided to open a Grammar School within the walled city of Bombay which, along with a smaller establishment for girls, were the first of many strands that have joint together to form the Cathedral & John Connon School. A Choir School, established with the primary objective of providing choristers for the St. Thomas Cathedral, Mumbai, the first Anglican Church in Mumbai was founded in October, 1875. Meanwhile The Bombay Scottish Education Society was founded in 1866. The society put up a beautiful building on the Esplanade, and named it for Mr John Connon (then Chief Registrar of Bombay).
In 1878 a high school in Byculla, set up by the Bombay Diocesan Society, was merged with the Choir School to form the Cathedral High School. The present Senior School building, a majestic blend of Indian and Gothic architecture, was erected in 1896. A girls' school had been started in 1880.
Finally, in 1922, in a public meeting held at the Town Hall (the present Asiatic Society of Bombay library), a suggestion was put forward by the principal of the Cathedral Boys' School for the Cathedral Schools and the Scottish School to work together, instead of competing. The idea was well-received, and thus the Anglo-Scottish Education Society was conceived. The schools were re-organized into the Cathedral Boys' School, the Cathedral Girls' School, and the John Connon School.
In the 1960s co-education was still viewed with trepidation, and when in 1965, the Principal, Rev. Ridding, stated that the only way to solve the financial and logistical problems of the school was to make it co-educational, some people felt so strongly about it that they went to court to thwart the school's plans. Justice Lentin, a man famous for his courageous judgments, pronounced that the school had every right to merge if it so desired. The merger proceeded smoothly.
Remark:A good issue on the school topic by India post. Thanks to my friend Debasis for posting the letter on the issue date by Speed post.As usual India post personal has put the delivery seal on the front side and not in back.

The Pooh stories have been translated into many languages, including Alexander Lenard's Latin translation, Winnie ille Pu, which was first published in 1958, and, in 1960, became the only Latin book ever to have been featured on the New York Times Best Seller List.Since the 1970s, Pooh Bear has been voiced by three actors: Sterling Holloway, Hal Smith and Jim Cummings

Seashells of Taiwan(IV) FDC from TAIWAN

FDC Name:Seashells of Taiwan
Issue Date:4th OCT'2010
Details:
Having previously issued three sets of stamps in the “Seashells of Taiwan” series (in October 2007, July 2008, and February 2009), Chunghwa Post is now issued with another set of four stamps, featuring Thatcheria mirabilis, Tibia martinii, Stellaria solaris and Rapa rapa.
The stamps are planned by Mr. Ching-yang Lai,
designed by Mr. Jheng Yi-lang and
printed in color offset by China Color Printing Co., Ltd.
The designs follow:

1. Thatcheria mirabilis (NT$5): Most of these spindle-shaped shells are pale tawny in color. With eight whorls, these unique and beautiful shells resemble spiral stairs. Their thin shells are covered with fine spiral and axial threads and their many layers of spires are slightly pointy. They live in the muddy sand bottom between 120 to 400 meters deep in the waters off Yilan as well as the southwest and northeast coasts of Taiwan.

2. Tibia martinii (NT$5): Shaped like spindles, these tawny-colored shells are light and thin with tall pointy spires. There are about 10 to 11 slightly rounded whorls. These shells have smooth and glossy surfaces, with leaf-like apertures and pointy slender siphonal canals. They live in the muddy bottom of the ocean over 100 meters deep. These rare shells are found from the southwest coast of Taiwan down to the Philippines and Borneo.

3. Stellaria solaris (NT$12): Cone-shaped, these light brown or tawny shells have six to seven slightly rounded whorls and very low spires. Their surfaces are covered with fine wave-like threads. Around each whorl is a row of finger-like protrusions spaced at regular intervals, which make them look like geared wheels. These protrusions also serve to fend off enemies and to prevent the shells from being upturned. On the continental slope off the southwest coast of Taiwan, within a depth of 200 meters, they can often be found in the muddy sand bottom.

4. Rapa rapa (NT$12): Shaped like pears or balls, and creamy white or pale yellow in color, these shells are thicker and have very low spires, large whorls, and obvious sutures. Their surfaces are covered with large obvious spiral sculptures and fine obscure axial threads. They have very large apertures, large umbilical openings and thick siphonal canals that extend downwards. Rapa rapa like to live in and feed on coral in shallow water in the sublittoral zone in the tropics. Widely distributed in the western Pacific Ocean, they can often be found in Taiwan’s east coast and the shallow coral reefs off Hengchun Peninsula.
Remark:Once again another beautiful series of stamps and FDC from Republic of China(TAIWAN).Thanks Chen for such lovely FDC posted on the issue date by Registered post.

Great Chinese Educators FDC from TAIWAN(Republic of China)

FDC Name:Great Chinese Educators.
Issue date:28th SEP'2010
Details:
To promote traditional cultural education, Chunghwa Post  issued a set of two stamps based on portraits of Zhu Xi and Confucius in the National Palace Museum collection. The stamps,
designed by Stony Image and
printed by China Color Printing Co., Ltd.
The other details are as follows
1. Zhu Xi (NT$5): Zhu Xi (1130-1200 AD), whose adult courtesy name Yuanhui, and the pseudonym Huian, and he was referred to as Mr. Ziyang or Mr. Kaoting by other scholars. Zhu Xi was the leading figure in the School of Principle during the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279), and he started the trend of studying philosophy in the Song Dynasty. Given the honorific suffix of “zi”, he became known as Zhuzi. Being a great philosopher and educator, Zhu Xi rebuilt the Bailudong and Yuelu colleges, developed the schools’ codes and offered instruction himself. Zhu Xi also demonstrated concern about the state of politics. He once wrote Emperor Xiaozong to make the case for fighting the Jurchen, and he was admired for his loyalty and moral integrity. Zhu Xi was a prolific writer, and the “Four Books” he compiled are considered important classical works among modern Chinese.
2. Confucius (NT$25): Confucius (551-479 BC), whose given name was Qiu and whose adult courtesy name was Zhongni, was born in the State of Lu (in modern-day Shandong Province) during the Spring and Autumn Period (770-476 BC). At 15, he was bent on learning, and at 30 he was established in his career. He founded his own school and became a pioneer of private education. The founder of Confucianism, Confucius advocated that rulers revert back to observing the “Rites of Zhou” and administer their nations with humanity and morality. He promoted the ideas that “in education there should be no class distinctions” and that “students should be taught in accordance with their aptitudes.” Throughout his life, he believed that “when the great principle prevails, the world is a commonwealth,” and he aimed to establish a civilization base on ceremonies and a code of courtesy. His wide-ranging and profound philosophy is admired by the people of the world, and he is still revered in Chinese communities as the “great sage and teacher.” Both stamps feature stamp-within-a-stamp designs.
The portrait of Zhu Xi was taken from the “Famous Chinese—Hsuan Chuang and Chu Hsi—Portrait Postage Stamps” issued on February 20, 1970, and the portrait of Confucius was taken from the “Chinese Culture Heroes Definitive Postage Stamps” issued on April 2, 1973.
