Conservation of Nature FDC from MALAYSIA

FDC Name:Conservation of Nature.
Issue date:18th JUN'2009.

Details:The conservation of nature is no longer an option; it is necessary to ensure that earth's vital natural resources are preserved and protected for the future generations. Through the centuries, mankind has destroyed forests, ravaged mountain slopes, polluted water and air, and even today it is ongoing. The ecology has become a victim of human activities.

Today, natural resources, which provide the basic necessities of life, have become scarce. They have been sacrificed in the name of development and economic well-being. The delicate ecological balance has been altered due to the indiscriminate damages inflicted upon nature. Global warming, receding water tables, depleting ozone layers, are only among some of the consequences of these damages.

Worldwide, organizations involved in the preservation of nature have taken initiatives to preserve the environment and are recommending holistic conservation strategies to ensure that natural resources are utilized in a sustainable fashion.

In Malaysia, steps have been taken by the relevant conservation organizations and authorities to ensure that Malaysia's environment is well preserved. The vast tropical rain forests, the unique marine life as well as the clean air is dependent on how we preserve and protect them. Today the conservation of nature has become a necessity of life.
Three denominations stamps with FDC was issued.
30sen: Clean Water
Malaysia's warm climate coupled with heavy rainfall makes our oceans an ideal home for a myriad of underwater marine life. However intense development has caused irreversible damages to our fragile water world. Conservation efforts are being initiated in order to protect and preserve our marine eco-system.

50sen: Go Green
The Malaysian rain forest is home to most of the plant and animal species in the world. However, due to deforestation, many of these species are becoming extinct. Our tropical rain forest play an important role in helping to sustain life. They act as a natural air purifier for our environment. With all the benefits that are derived from the rain forests, we must ensure they are protected.

50sen: Fresh Air
Malaysia rapid emergence as an industrialized country has reaped many benefits economically. With increased development, environmental concerns have also arise and our country has to monitor the increasing air pollution. Thus, air quality monitoring is an important part of the country's strategy in the pollution prevention program to ensure clean and fresh air for healthy living.

  • NT$5.00: Kaohsiung Arena
This modernistic gym is equipped with standard Olympic facilities, making it a great venue for basketball and volleyball games as well as 200-meter races in indoor track and field. On the lower right of the stamp are the mascots of the World Games 2009 Kaohsiung: Kao Mei and Syong Ge. Dressed in red and blue respectively, these "water spirit" babies have a water drop for a head. Their bodies will light up after absorbing solar energy with the little spheres on their heads. On the lower right of the stamp is the games' logo — a stylized Chinese character Kao (as in Kaohsiung), "written" in a colorful and rhythmic flowing ribbon, resembling the beautiful shapes of athletes in competition. Ancient Chinese Art Treasures FDC from Taiwan

FDC Name:Ancient Chinese Art Treasures.
Issue Date:20th JULY 2009.
Details:To spread understanding about the beauty of ancient Chinese artifacts, Chunghwa Post is issuing a set of four stamps and a souvenir sheet on ancient handicrafts from the National Palace Museum collection. The details of denominations are as follows
  • NT$5.00: A Pair of Gold Gourds, Qing Dynasty, 18th Century
The surface of these gold bottle gourds features a lacy design of intertwining flowers, leaves and tiny bottle gourds. There are three leaves sticking out from the stem of each gourd. These gourds have two detachable parts. The upper parts fit over lips at the tops of the lower sections. In Chinese, larger fruits produced by vines are called gua, whereas smaller fruits of vines are called die. Because the bottle gourd continually fruits and flowers, it is associated with the Chinese expression "mian mian gua die," which is used to describe a family with abundant descendants.
  • NT$5.00: Gold Bowl Used Personally by the Qianlong Emperor, Qing Dynasty (1736-1795) (The interior of the bowl is smooth and unadorned, while the exterior is densely embellished with small millet-shaped beads set into a pattern of pomegranates, flowers, and leaves. The result is dazzling and exuberant. On the bottom, inside the ring foot, there are four traced-standard-script characters carved in intaglio: Qianlong Yuyong ("for the personal use of Emperor Qianlong").
  • NT$12.00: Mughal Empire Large Round Urn with Inlay Ca. 17th-18th Century
The body of the urn is covered with hexagonal plates of bluish white jade. Metal wire inlay may have been present originally between the jade pieces although no trace remains. The jade pieces are inlaid with rubies, emeralds, topazes and brown gemstones set in gold wire.
  • NT$12.00: Gilt Ewer with Cloud and Dragon Decor, Qing Dynasty
This pot, in the shape of a bottle gourd, has a long spout and a long handle, to which the lid is chained. Four seal script characters—wan shou wu jiang ("may you live forever")—and dragons are carved in relief on the belly of the gourd. The Chinese words for bottle gourd (hulu) sound similar to the words for good fortune and prosperity (fu lu). Consequently, a gourd bearing the four characters described above conveys the idea of "good fortune, prosperity and longevity" ("fu lu shou"), three words that are commonly regarded as life's greatest blessings in Chinese culture. This was an imperial wine vessel used by Qing Dynasty emperors.

Remark:The Taiwan FDC are great in design and the quality of image in stamps are great.Nice m/s real posted FDC by my friend from Taiwan.

Fire & Rescue Service FDC from GB

FDC Name:Fire & Rescue Service.
Issue Date:1st SEP'2009
Details:In recent years changes in the environment have placed greater demands on the fire service. During widespread flooding in 2007, fire crews rescued over 9,000 people as more than 55,000 homes and businesses were flooded, and with around 5 million people thought to be living in flood-risk areas, the threat of severe flooding remains.Royal Mail has issued 6 stamps and FDC.The details are as follows
  • 1st Class – Firefighting: The firefighters of the UK’s 58 Fire and Rescue Authorities are well trained in tackling the types of incidents described below – but it wasn’t always the case. There has been evidence of organised firefighting in Britain since the Roman invasion of AD 43, but it took the Great Fire of London in1666 to move things forward. Insurance companies offering the first type of fire cover were formed, enabling citizens to pay to protect their home or business in the unfortunate event of a fire. The same firms also established private fire brigades specifically to respond to emergency calls from their policy-holders. Nine years after the Edinburgh Fire Engine Establishment was created in 1824, several London insurance companies merged to set up the first London fire brigade, laying the foundations for the modern fire service. Modern day firefighters working for the UK’s Fire and Rescue Services are primed and ready to deal with a wide range of emergencies. Every shout is different from the last – from house fires caused by faulty electrical appliances or out-of-control barbecues to warehouse blazes, factory fires or arson attacks.
  • 54p – Chemical Fire:Most of Britain’s Fire and Rescue Services have at least one chemical incident unit whose firefighters have been trained to deal with emergencies involving hazardous materials. Key roles include the containment of spillages, decontamination and environmental protection. Specialist apparatus, which varies between units, includes: radiation-monitoring equipment, chemical containment and absorption materials, leak-sealing equipment, foam concentrate, pumps for pumping up industrial chemicals, and drain blockers.
  • 56p – Emergency Rescue:According to figures for 2007 released by the Department for Transport, there were a total of 182,115 road accidents involving personal injury, of which 27,036 involved death or serious injury. First on the scene of many road traffic accidents are members of the Fire and Rescue Service. In addition to putting out vehicle fires, the fire crew must ensure that the surrounding area is made safe and the spillage of any hazardous substance is contained. In more serious collisions, firefighters are involved in freeing individuals trapped in the wreckage.
  • 62p – Flood Rescue:According to the Environment Agency, around 5million people in England and Wales now live in flood risk areas, and with the UK’s weather becoming evermore extreme, the nation’s Fire and Rescue Services now play a key role in responding to flood-related emergencies. In summer 2007, widespread flooding placed great demands on the fire service. More than 55,000 homes and businesses were flooded, with over 9,000 people rescued. In terms of scale, the Fire Brigades Union described the rescue effort as ‘the biggest in peacetime Britain’.
  • 81p – Search and Rescue:Firefighters with training in urban search and rescue (USAR) techniques use specialist equipment to lift, cut away and remove debris from collapsed buildings and damaged vehicles to make the area safe enough to search for casualties trapped inside. Members of each USAR unit are trained to use a range of specialist apparatus, including listening devices, communication probes, technical search cameras, cutting, drilling and breaking tools, heavy-capacity airbags, and propping and shoring equipment. Specially adapted vehicles are also used in USAR work.
  • 90p – Fire Safety:Fire authorities across the UK have a long tradition of maintaining vital links within their local communities. From school visits and fire prevention talks to safety checks and smoke alarm tests in the home, local fire services play an important role in community life. In 2002 the London Fire Brigade established Local Intervention Fire Education (LIFE) – an intensive five-day course that enables young people to learn a range of skills, including handson firefighting, first aid and fire prevention. LIFE has since been adopted by a number of regional fire services.

Technical details:Designed by Rose Design the six 37 x 35mm stamps are printed in gravure by De La Rue Security Print Ltd. Perforations are 14 x 14½ and phosphor is 'all over'.Photographic.

Remark:Nice true Royal mail FDC with great design.

Mammals of the Baltic Sea FDC from POLAND

FDC Name:Mammals of the Baltic Sea
Issue Date:31st JUL'2009
Details:All the animals inhabiting the Baltic Sea are under protection. These are three species of seals and the porpoise - the only Baltic cetacean. Until the beginning of the 20 th century the sea was abundant in these animals, yet since they feed chiefly on fish they were found harmful. There were awards granted to those who killed them. It soon led to almost total extermination of the Baltic seals and cetaceans. The attempts at restoring the population of those animals have been taking place for nearly 20 years. Presently, the main threat they may face is the fishing net they may entangle in. Once entangled, the animals suffocate as they fail to resurface for oxygen. Another threat is posed by environmental pollution which brings on diseases and problems related to reproduction. A third, very important factor, is the development of tourism and fishery. Lack of peace as well as noise scare the animals away from their habitat giving them with no chance to rest, which usually leads to exhaustion. This is the reason why it is forbidden to interfere with a resting seal. However, it is worth informing the Marine Mammal Centre about such encounter.
The Seal Centre of the Hel Marine Station - it is a field station of the Marine Station belonging to the Institute of Oceanography at the University of Gdańsk. The main aim of the station is to restore a colony of the grey seal in the region of the southern Baltic Sea. Those seals, which require care or have been bred in the Centre, return to their natural environment remaining valuable source of information about the species, its migrations or health condition. The Centre performs also educational work and popularizes the mammals living in the Baltic Sea.
New stamps and First Day Cover (FDC)
For the summer time, when plenty of fellow countrymen loosen up at the sea or just recall the stroll on the sands, Poczta Polska prepared a set of stamps presenting inhabitants of the Baltic Sea, the inhabitants whose existence is often forgotten or not known of. Four stamps in the scenery of a sea shore show: a porpoise, a grey seal, a harbour seal and a ringed seal. The stamps are accompanied by the First Day Cover and an occasional date stamp in use in Hel 1 Post Office. Inauguration of the stamps was held in the Hel Marine Mammals Centre.
  1. The porpoise (Phocaena phocaena)
Although the porpoise possesses its own monument in Gdynia, not every child knows that the Baltic Sea is inhabited by a relative of dolphins. Unfortunately, it is threatened with extinction. The knowledge about this animal is negligible due to its small number (estimated amount around 1,000). It weighs approximately 45- 70 kg with an approximate body length of 1.5 - 1.7 m. The animal is encountered in the region of the Gulf of Gdańsk and the Puck Bay.
The stamp with a porpoise presents an emerged upper part of the porpoise's body revealing its nostrils and characteristic triangular dorsal fin.
  2. The grey seal (Halichoreus grypus) - the largest of the Baltic seals with a body length up to 2.5 m. The weight of the males may exceed even 300 kg. After birth the young are covered with white fur. Once the seals were in abundance; now they are in rarity mainly encountered in the region of the Gulf of Gdańsk.
  3. The harbour seal (Phoca vitulina) - also called a sea dog. In spite of the name it is the least numerous species of the Baltic Sea. It lives in colonies, swims fast and dives 150 meters deep. Its body is around 1.5 - 2 m. long and weighs around 100- 180 kg. The pups have an "adult" fur colour.
  4. The ringed seal (Phoca hispida) - the jar seal - its name comes from light, ring spots on their back. It is the smallest Baltic seal 105- 170 cm long weighing 45- 140 kg. It leads rather lone life.

Post Boxes FDC from GB

FDC Name:Post Boxes
Issue date:18th AUG'2009

Details:We’ve been using post boxes, for more than 200 years and it has discovered that the 1st known post box was installed at Wakefield Post Office® in 1809. To celebrate this anniversary Royal Mail is releasing a Miniature Sheet of four stamps featuring iconic wall mounted Post Boxes with FDC.
A post box is the overall title for any kind of posting box whether it’s standing proud on the pavement (pillar box), a smaller freestanding version (pedestal box), on, or in, a wall (wall box), or on a pole (lamp box).
The first Post Boxes, often just slots into the office, appeared over 200 years ago at Post Offices® for the convenience of people posting unpaid letters (the letters were paid for by the recipient).
Wall boxes as we know them today were installed from 1857 as a cheaper alternative to pillar boxes, and have established themselves as a national icon, serving the needs of smaller communities.
